Donnafugata have always exuded a lot of style. A few years ago in London, the winery's owner, José Rallo was giving us a tasting lunch in a smart restaurant in Clerkenwell. The wines were ripe, smooth and well designed. Whilst we tasted, Jose stood up and sang to us acapella. Having already recorded jazz albums in at the Blue Note in New York, this made for a memorable tasting experience.

Vineyards are popping up all over Britain, especially in the south of England and Wales, and from these vineyards are sprouting many an international wine award to accompany them.
Having tasted many of the English wines that are on the market I am surprised that there has not been more take up from restaurants and bars in serving our home grown splendour.

How many times have we heard local wine-o friends tell us categorically that red wine cannot be served with fish? It is a malady of gibberish first experienced in childhood but that has a habit of reoccurring throughout life. In order to put this dubiously fishy nonsense to bed, Harry Niazi, of Olley’s Fish Experience in South London’s Herne Hill, decided to investigate with a group of wine and fish enthusiasts including Andy Neather, former wine writer for the London Evening Standard.

There is Montepulicano d’Abruzzo wine everywhere in London but how do you sort the truly remarkable from the truly ordinary? Well, it is all in the taste, and considering that I have visited this winery, tasted their wines and enjoyed them emphatically, here is a very decent tip:
Cantina Zaccagnini, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo - a rich full bodied red wine with smooth silk tannin, cherry, spice and a hint of chocolate. Perfect for a whole range of dishes especially roasted foods but equally pleasant with lighter dishes or with cheese.
