Lord of The Rings (1937 – 1949): "The years have passed like swift draughts of the sweet mead".
Gosnells of Peckham, London’s only Meadery, has launched ‘Make your own Mead’ courses for 2019.
To be held every Saturday throughout January 2019, the two-hour session will see guests immersed in all things honey, after which they will leave Peckham with a giant 4.5 litre bottle of their own fermenting Mead.
Tapping into the new Mead trend, the course will outline the history of Mead, and hear about Tom Gosnell’s ‘Mead epiphany’ during a holiday to the United States, and of Mead’s re-emergence there as an even-cooler-than-beer category there, with prices to match.
A tour of the Meadery will be followed by a tutored tasting of the Gosnells core range. This will include Gosnells 5.5% Lightly Sparkling Modern Mead, plus four samples of their seasonal meads, made using different kinds of honey and fermentation techniques. In addition, other kinds of Mead from UK, USA, and Europe, will be available for comparison.
Guests will be supplied with all the equipment needed to brew their own mead, selecting the core ingredients, mixing up the “must” and pitching the all-important yeast. They will then be briefed on what to expect from the bubbling, burgeoning fermentation process and how to finish the brews at home, which should take around a month. Once each guest’s Mead is fully fermented, guests can take it back home, with handy tips from Team Gosnells of serving suggestions and cocktails.
‘Make your own Mead’ courses are priced £75 and can be booked on: https://www.gosnells.co.uk
A meadingful fact: Mead is made by fermenting honey with water, sometimes with fruits, spices, grains, hops etc. The words "mead" and "honey-wine" are often used interchangeably, but some cultures differentiate between the two. The defining characteristic of mead is that the main source of its fermentable sugar comes from honey.
