Donnafugata have always exuded a lot of style. A few years ago in London, the winery's owner, José Rallo was giving us a tasting lunch in a smart restaurant in Clerkenwell. The wines were ripe, smooth and well designed. Whilst we tasted, Jose stood up and sang to us acapella. Having already recorded jazz albums in at the Blue Note in New York, this made for a memorable tasting experience.
With that in mind, the question here is who is bestowing style on who? The label is indeed extremely elegant. The wine is full summer fruit with delicious fresh acidity that keeps the flavour titillatingly alive. There are also hints of summer flowers. There are rosé wines we won't mention because they don't deserve it. There are others that are good and then there are those others that are very good.
This falls into this last category. Super-stylish, bags of delicious flavour from the blend of native Sicilian grapes Nerello Mascalese and Nocera that are grown on the northern slopes of Mount Etna and on the hills of Contessa Entellina, near Palermo, evoking the warmth and natural aromatics of Siciliy alive in the imagination and, of course, give you the Dolce & Gabbana fashionista edge.
