The Dulwich Picture Gallery maybe the oldest purpose-built gallery in the world but it’s security systems are still avant-garde. Two of the Dutch master painters masterpieces were removed from their hangings but didn’t leave the gallery grounds as the Met police swept in and scared the robbers off.

Rembrandt's Light at the Dulwich Picture Gallery

The Dulwich Picture Gallery (DPG) launched a new Rembrandt exhibition called “Rembrandt’s Light” on the 3rd of October to mark the 350th anniversary of his death. This unique collection of 35 of his best masterpieces, etchings and drawings, some shown for the first time in the UK, are to further explore the master as a painter, teacher, “imperfectionist” and, if he was alive today, his potential as a filmmaker.

Pairing red wine and fish

How many times have we heard local wine-o friends tell us categorically that red wine cannot be served with fish? It is a malady of gibberish first experienced in childhood but that has a habit of reoccurring throughout life. In order to put this dubiously fishy nonsense to bed, Harry Niazi, of Olley’s Fish Experience in South London’s Herne Hill, decided to investigate with a group of wine and fish enthusiasts including Andy Neather, former wine writer for the London Evening Standard.

Copper River Distillery

Talk of vintages is usually the preserve of the wine industry but we should keep in mind that other drinks that we like to consume are also dependent on the terroir characteristics such as climate, altitude, soils, and other factors relating to the place where crops are grown.

The Copper Rivet Distillery, ideally situated on the banks of the River Medway in Kent, welcomed delivery of its Holy Trinity of cereals from the 2019 harvest, ready to distil the next vintage of its Dockyard Gin.

Great British F*ck Off Festival London

Brexit has divided many in the country but there is one thing we all share in common on the subject: we all want a better a brighter future for Britain. The devil is just in the detail of how we get there. One thing many Europeans respect British people for is our sense of pragmatism and sense of fair-play.

Air Quality London

In 1956 Parliament passed the Clean Air Act in response to the smog of 1952 when zero visibility and impacted human health became too much to bear. Today we face a similar crisis except that the poison from car engines is largely invisible, but the health effects will be felt by Londoners, and by a much worse degree, our children, for years to come.

Veganuary - Vegan food in London

One of the biggest joys of this trial period, aside from losing 5 kilos and generally feeling less tired, has been the discovery of a wide range of flavours from herbs and spices that I had only ever glimpsed at before. Living in West Dulwich, a trip to Khan’s in Peckham Rye is like sliding through the rabbit hole into a new world of pulses and cooking supplies.

Belly or cemetery?

Meats in curry have always seemed like a waste of time. Cauliflower and peas in a Madras provide the same texture and satiety without the weighty bloated feeling of ingesting chunks of dubious meat. I’m told it is more in line with original Indian recipes too. In fact, a few years ago, during a conference sailing to Casablanca, I interviewed the Indian Swami, and author, Agnivesh. His one really memorable quote was to not “make a cemetery of your stomach by eating dead animals.”
